Fırat Es, PhD-degreed GÜNAM researcher from ODTÜ Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Micro and Nanotechnology Program, was awarded with “ODTÜ Thesis of the Year Award for 2015-2016 Academic Year” by Parlar Education and Research Foundation. Es took his award with his advisor, GÜNAM director Prof. Dr. Raşit Turan, in a ceremony organized in ODTÜ Cultural and Convention Center..

The title of the study, which brought Es the award, is “Novel Metal Assisted Etching Technique for Enhanced Light Management in Black Crystalline Si Solar Cells” (Advisor: Prof. Dr. Raşit Turan & Co-advisor: Prof. Dr. Tayfun Akın).

On 3 and 4 November 2016, Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO) hosted an international event organized as a merge of various sessions and a big fair on energy technologies: 9th International Energy Congress and Fair (Energy is Future – EIF 2016). The event had a broad participation thanks to the information stands and session speakers of public institutions, companies from private sector, university research centers and societies. As much as renewable energy applications took an important part among the fair stands, they were also the main titles in some sessions of EIF 2016 like solar energy conversion technologies.

GÜNAM attended the fair and exhibited some samples from its own solar cell products as mono and multi-crystalline silicon and thin film. GÜNAM researchers also gave some information to the stand visitors about GÜNAM’s new R&D building under construction and their studies on the next generation solar cells.

Prof. Dr. Raşit Turan, the director of GÜNAM, was one of the session moderators in EIF 2016 and at the beginning of the session; Turan gave an introductory speech titled “Güneş Enerjisi Teknolojilerinde Gelişmeler (Developments on Solar Energy Technologies)”.

Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, supports “European Researchers’ Night” organized on the last Friday of every September as an EU-wide public event of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). To draw interest of especially children, teenagers and parents and motivate them about a scientific career; more than 250 cities across Europe and neighboring countries contribute to this big event with entertaining and interactive scientific experiments, demonstrations, exhibitions, talks and other ways. The main aim is to show the amusing side of science to society.

This year, in 30th September 2016, ODTÜ Society and Science Research and Application Center (TBM) has been qualified to perform this event in Ankara campus of ODTÜ with the participation of many departments, research centers and societies from the university. The main theme of TBM’s event, titled “Evde Bilim Eğlencelidir”, was to present interesting scientific facts in our daily life and homes through five main parts of a house: Living room, kitchen, bathroom, garage and garden.

During the event, a large number of visitors (especially many students from national primary and high schools with their teachers and parents) visited the participator stands. GÜNAM also gave a support for the “garden” applications of “Evde Bilim Eğlencelidir” with a small-scale agricultural irrigation system. The system has a small water reservoir including a submersible pump which its operating current and electricity is produced from solar panels.

“Bilim Eğlencelidir” Fair

GÜNAM attended the science fair “Bilim Eğlencelidir”, organized by ODTÜ Society and Science Research and Application Center (TBM) in Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO), 17 April 2016. During the fair; many scientific and technological experiments, exhibitons and talks from ODTÜ departments and research centers were entertainingly and educatory performed for the fair visitors.

Within the fair, GÜNAM demonstrated a model house which provides its electricity from the solar cells on its roof. In GÜNAM’s stand, some solar cell samples and a solar panel were exhibited for the visitors, too.

PV Summer School Succesfully Completed

GÜNAM organized its first PV School composed of fundamental courses on solar cells and PV technology between 13-24 June 2016. During two weeks, 70 participants took various lectures from the notable guest and host researchers of the summer school; including introduction to solar energy, cell types, power electronics for PV and panel technologies.

In the first week, the famous names of Photovoltaics like Martin A. Green, Rolf Brendel and GÜNAM’s lecturers gave theoretical lectures on research-development progresses including recent studies of their own institutions based on solar PV science and technology.

In the second week, GÜNAM researchers provided a practical training on c-Si solar cell fabrication stages to the registered participants in GÜNAM Cell Line.

As social events of PV School2016, “Cappadocia and Ankara tours” and “Barbecue Party” were organized for the lecturers and participants.

The complete list of PV School 2016 lecturers with their lecture title:

Selçuk Yerci (METU EE-Turkey): Fundamentals of Semiconductors and Solar Cells
